Time for tough talk on taxes
Long Island has long needed a serious discussion about money, and its time may have finally arrived.
On Sept. 19, the Long Island Index released a poll of public attitudes toward taxes and ways of cutting them. The poll revealed a disconnect between what Long Islanders think they should pay in taxes and what expenses they’re willing to cut. For 90 percent of us, making taxes “reasonable” would take an average $3,000 cut, but the area with the biggest costs, schools, is where we’re least willing to reduce spending.
